In the present, the Topians are Aerosis-free but may not venture out of their city unless they wear protective gear since exposure to the air outside seems to cause the marks. If, however, such things happen, the infected individual is no longer allowed to live in the island city in fear that his or her disease will be inherited to a potential offspring and in this way gradually become a common occurrence.
