Short for Desolation, Des is the part of the city that is located on the shore and where 99% percent of the population lives in crammed up houses and in poverty.

The residents here have no means for self improvement because they must work long hours at the factories and have little to no education. Most are employed in the production of synthetic food and goods that are required for Top, however, many are jobless and have little means to make a comfortable living.

Every single resident of Des suffers from Aerosis, although some more than others. Although the severity of the disease on one’s skin has become a social stigma, the disease has become part of the identity of the community.
